Marcus Whitman letters to Alanson Hinman 1847

Marcus Whitman was a missionary in the Oregon Territory who was killed by Cayuse Indians in 1847. These letters, sent to his friend Alanson Hinman, shed light on conditions at the mission in the weeks before his death.

Alanson Hinman came to the Oregon Country in 1844 and taught school at the Whitman Mission. He later moved to the Willamette Valley, was collector of customs at Astoria, and finally settled in Forest Grove. He was a trustee of Pacific University. Marcus and Narcissa Whitman served as missionaries to the Cayuse Indians at Waiilatpu (near Walla Walla, Washington) from 1836 until they were murdered in 1847.
